Wine Spectator has revealed its Top 100 Wines of 2013. Out of around 20,000 contenders from more than a dozen countries, three South African wines have been selected: Hamilton Russell Chardonnay 2012 (19th, R283 per bottle), Ashbourne Sandstone 2008 (71st) and AA Badenhorst Red 2009 (93rd).

Beyond SA, we were delighted to see Lopez Heredia Vina Gravonia Crianza White 2003 in 29th place. We have just landed this beautiful Rioja, which scores 93 points and is available for R225 per bottle.

As usual, the wines were judged on quality, value, availability and ‘that X-factor’ – a wine’s singularity and ability to excite the magazine’s editors. The top picks for 2013 include big names such as Château Beaucastel as well as more obscure bottlings.
