‘It’s about as pure and unadulterated as any modern-era South African wine I’ve tasted,’ says Christian Eedes on the Raats Cabernet Franc 2012. An exceptional Stellenbosch vintage, 2012 is the latest release from the ‘king of Cabernet Franc’, and it’s an absolute stonker. Bruwer Raats believes that this is his finest vintage to date and, at 95 points, it’s one of Christian’s most highly rated red wines!

‘A really lovely array of aromas and flavours including red and black berries, violets, crushed leaves and pencil shavings. The fruit concentration is awesome.and there’s also a wonderful sense of freshness although you don’t notice the acidity specifically. The tannins, meanwhile, are firm but fine and it should be a pleasure to watch them resolve over the next 10 years, maybe 20.’ – Christian Eedes, Wine Mag

We tasted the 2012 (along with all 11 previous vintages) at our Raats Cabernet Franc vertical in Johannesburg this week and were blown away by the quality. If you’re in Cape Town, join us on the 8th of October; Bruwer does not have enough bottles to ever revisit the earliest vintages again, so this tasting is not be missed! View details.

Besides the 2012, we are offering an incredible, but limited, pack containing 2 bottles each of the previous 3 vintages, all highly rated and perfect for the cellar. The 2013 Dolomite has also just been released. It is a more approachable version in a Loire-like style and offers ridiculous value at R115. Please note that the 2012 CF is available pre-release for delivery in November 2014.

Tasting notes

Raats Cabernet Franc 2011
Red currant and cherry, dried herbs, subtle oak spice. Weightless intensity, lovely bright acidity and tannins which are paradoxically super-fine but also provide plenty of grip. Carefully conceived and precisely executed – hats off, Mr Raats. 92/100, Christian Eedes

Raats Cabernet Franc 2010
Subtle oak and pleasant herbaceous notes on the nose. An elegant wine with red and black fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Clean and pure, relatively austere. Long, dry finish. 17/20, Christian Eedes

Raats Cabernet Franc 2009
Dark fruit and pencil shavings on the nose. Rich and intense but balanced. Extremely primary with fresh acidity and firm but fine tannins. Serious and demanding. 17.5/20, Christian Eedes

Raats Dolomite Cabernet Franc 2013
The nose promises mulberries and plummy fruitiness. Dark berry fruit and a hint of dried herbs linger on the palate. The wine is elegant, showing great purity of fruit and is extremely moreish, with a hint of wet-stone minerality. Very Loire-like, drinks well now but will age 3-5 years.
