Neal Martin South Africa report

Neal Martin’s newly-released South Africa report is a bright and optimistic look at the state of the wine industry in the Cape. South Africa is still ‘the most dynamic and exciting New World country’, says Martin, thanks to terroir, vine age, and talented winemakers. Whilst some traditional regions are stuck in the slow lane, they could learn much from the ‘certified dudes’ of the Swartland, who continue to thrill tasters with wines that bridge the gap between ‘Old World classicism and New World exuberance’. His report does, however, caution that more substandard Swartland wines are beginning to appear as outsiders attempt to cash in on the region’s renown.

Another of Neal Martin’s favourite areas is Hemel-en-Aarde, where there is an abundance of growers and exciting wines that deserve more recognition. ‘I have tasted some of the greatest wines from Burgundy,’ he says. ‘Take it from me, Hemel-en-Aarde is making serious, world-class Pinot Noir.’

His recommended producers are shown below, followed by a list of the most highly rated wines. Read the full report on www.erobertparker.com (subscribers only).
