‘Will Skurfberg and Chenin Blanc become to us what Montrachet and Chardonnay is to Burgundy?’ asks Christian Eedes of Winemag.co.za. This small site is responsible for producing the iconic Alheit Vineyards ‘Magnetic North Makstok’, as well as the acclaimed FRAM Chenin Blanc and Sadie Family Old Vines Skurfberg Chenin Blanc. These much-sought-after wines sold out in a flash.
Fortunately you still have a chance to get your hands on a piece of this terroir incroyable. Produced by Ginny Povall, the Botanica Mary Delany Collection Chenin Blanc 2013 shows great depth of fruit with a fine and linear acidity reverberating through it. The oak integrates brilliantly, adding weight and texture that harmonises with the verve and minerality that is typical of wines from this site.
‘The Skurfberg is a place of wonder. Conventional wisdom says the further north one goes, the poorer the wine will be, but in this remarkable mountain area we find solid proof of the opposite. There are three farmers who own these old vineyards, ranging between 35 and 50 years and lying between 440m and 550m above sea level. Indeed, this elevation is a one huge contributor to quality. The cold Atlantic is only 36 kilometers away, and this also plays a role in keeping these dry highlands cooler than neighbouring areas. However, we are convinced that the strange soil is the real key to the uniqueness of these wines.’
– Chris and Suzanne Alheit of Alheit Vineyards
‘This has slightly more new wood than previous releases, but the wine has more than enough structure to cope. There’s a touch of residual sugar, but it’s the piercing minerality and the palate length which really distinguish this old bush vine white from Clanwilliam. Apple, citrus and tight, palate-tingling acidity. Drink: 2014-20.’ – Tim Atkin, 95/100
