Alheit Vineyards has from the outset been regarded by the likes of Neal Martin and Tim Atkin as a Cape ‘First Growth’. Tim Atkin says: ‘White blends should be South Africa’s USP’ and ‘Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s most undervalued white grape.’ At Alheit Vineyards, these sentiments are clearly understood and taken to heart.
In June we made our now annual trip to the Hemelrand cellar to taste the Alheit 2014 releases. Hemelrand is where Suzaan and Chris Alheit conjure up their art and although 2014 was a demanding vintage, it is in such moments that the true artistry of a winemaker shines. It is clear to us that no stone was left unturned (literally) by team Alheit to produce these compelling wines, and we were pleased to find that they are continuing their fine upward trajectory in quality. In fact, this could be their best Cartology to date!
Cartology 2014: ‘By now you are probably familiar with the concept, vineyards, and character of our Cartology bottlings. Cartology 2014 is our favourite so far.’ – Suzaan and Chris Alheit
‘89% Chenin Blanc, 11% Semillon. Lime, peach, yellow earth and a heady, end-of-summer floral note. Sumptuous fruit – this vintage has a real generosity about it without being at all too ripe. Starts big but comes thrillingly to a point – there’s driving acidity and the finish is long and savoury. Shows a real confidence about it.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za. 93/100

Alheit Vineyards Magnetic North Mountain Makstok 2014 (R475 on allocation)
‘100% Chenin Blanc from a vineyard plated in the early 1980s on the Skurfberg. An ethereal nose of lime, lemon, pear and peach plus a little mushroom. Mind-blowing fruit purity and arresting acidity – it manages to convey both the essence of the variety AND a sense of place. The finish meanwhile is extraordinarily long. Intense but not weighty, vital and refined, this is a beautiful wine.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za. Score: 96/100
Alheit Vineyards Radio Lazarus 2014 (R475 on allocation)
‘100% Chenin Blanc from a vineyard in 1978 from a vineyard on Goede Hoop in Bottelary, Stellenbosch. An exquisite nose with top notes of fynbos and potpourri followed by pear, peach and lime. The palate shows startling fruit concentration plus snappy but wonderfully coated acidity while the finish is long and pithy. Possesses wonderful balance and moves really well in the mouth – utterly seamless.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za. Score: 95/100
Alheit Vineyards Arrow Heart Semillon 2014 (R475 on allocation)
‘This is a blend of 75% Semillon Gris and 25% Semillon Blanc and is skin fermented – super-geeky and pretty much defies scoring as you either get it or you don’t…’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za
