Tim Atkin, world-renowned wine critic, writer and Master of Wine with over 30 years’ experience in the industry, has once again classified SA producers into quality categories. The Tim Atkin Cape 2015 Classification is loosely derived from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It includes 6 bands, namely First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Growths followed by the Crus Bourgeois. This classification is a prelude to his newly released South Africa report, which can be purchased on Timatkin.com.
Tim comments: ‘This year I have increased the number of classified growths to 75 to reflect on the dynamism and excitement of the Cape wine scene, and [I have] boosted the crus bourgeois to 75, too.’
You can view the full list here.
Atkin’s First Growths exemplify a smorgasbord of older and new estates, with wineries such as Klein Constantia categorised as a First Growth alongside the likes of Mullineux and Leeu, established in 2007. Five producers have been promoted to First Growths this year – AA Badenhorst, Delaire Graff, Keermont, Porseleinberg and Rall.
According to Atkin, ‘These wineries [those within the 2015 Classification] will help to define the Cape wine industry over the next quarter of a century.’
Wine Cellar stocks all of the First Growths as per the 2015 Cape Classification and they can be viewed below.
