Wines from the De Trafford estate and David Trafford’s Malgas project, Sijnn, dominated in the latest publication of the Wine Spectator Insider.

According to this week’s newsletter, which focused on wines that had ‘most excited’ the publication’s editors in their recent tastings, South African producers are delivering ‘tremendous’ Cabernets, Chardonnays and Rhône-style bottlings.

The De Trafford and Sijnn wines in the article all scored above 92 points, making them ‘outstanding’ wines on the WS scoring system.

The de Trafford Straw Wine 2012 made the ‘hot wines’ list, meaning the Wine Spectator tasting panel considered it an ‘exciting discovery’ and, although hard to find, ‘worth seeking out’.

Below is the list of local wines in the newest instalment of Wine Spectator Insider:

De Trafford Straw Wine – 94/100
Lush and layered, with white chocolate, golden raisin, heather honey and fresh persimmon notes, this unctuous sweetie glides along, picking up extra papaya and mango details through the finish. Exotic and gorgeous. Made from air-dried Chenin Blanc grapes. Drink now through 2026.’ — James Molesworth, Senior Editor of Wine Spectator Insider
