Last night, Wine Cellar’s tasting — ‘Legendary South African wines back to the 1940s’ — gave us the opportunity to indulge in of some of the most scarce SA vintage wines.
The evening was a celebration of the hands-off approach, lower alcohols and blending styles prominent in the remarkable wines of the 60s and 70s. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsaut and Pinotage all played their part.
The tasting included a 1979 Alto Cabernet Sauvignon, 1974 Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon, 1965 Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon, 1970 Chateau Libertas and a 1969 Lanzerac Pinotage. They all showed remarkable colour, fantastic concentration of fruit and shone with a weightless intensity. Offering a rare and extraordinary experience to all those who joined, the evening’s tasting will be an occasion to be remember.
