In a recent two-part interview with Liv-ex, Tim Atkin speaks of South Africa and our new generation of producers with such earnest and open regard. Concerning the cynicism around his generous scores, Atkin explains that his high marks are born out of passion and the desire to highlight our country’s finest wines which, although underrated, are up there with the best in the world.

Atkin shows marked admiration for two of our Young Guns, both past and present, who he places at the top of the ‘unbelievably talented group’ of young local winemakers. Firstly, Chris Alheit who Atkin, being one of the first to bring international attention to the Alheit Vineyard wines, hopes was sped towards early success aided by his and Neal Martin’s praise.

Then there’s Reenen Borman, the producer behind Atkin’s ‘Red Wine of the Year’ in his 2016 South Africa report. As Atkin puts it, ‘[Reenen is] a ludicrously young winemaker… who is already a star. This kid is 28 and he is off the charts brilliant.
