Alex Dale and his team produce only the most individual, terroir-focused wines under the Radford Dale range. Their dedication to nature, geology and climate is beautifully expressed in the latest releases from the exceptional 2015 vintage.

Alex’s own AD Pinot Noir 2015 is one of the finest and most accomplished examples of Pinot from Elgin. Bottled only in outstanding years, this Burgundian-style wine focuses on structure rather than fruitiness and is especially crafted for cellaring. A limited cuvée, it is 100% wild-yeast fermented, bone dry and matured in a 228-litre, second-fill barrel. This release is exclusive to Wine Cellar.

From Stellenbosch comes the sumptuous and brilliantly balanced Renaissance of Chenin Blanc 2015. Produced from a single vineyard, naturally whole-bunch fermented and raised in older oak, it is a textbook example of Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc. Beguiling and delicious now, it will mature over the next 5-8 years. Limited availability.

The last wine from the trio is the most individual. From a single block of Syrah farmed organically, the Radford Dale Nudity Syrah 2015 is possibly South Africa’s finest example of natural winemaking. Every precaution is taken to produce a wine that requires no sulphur addition. Grown in ancient granitic soils from the highly regarded Voor Paardeberg region, this unique wine celebrates freshness and the unadulterated soils in which it is grown.

Radford Dale AD Pinot Noir 2015 – R 400
If you like the wines of Pommard, you’ll like this Elgin Pinot Noir, made with co-fermented 777 and 115 clones. Deeply coloured, firm and concentrated, it’s a firm, compact, savoury red with lots of oak and the structure to age in bottle. A wine that will reward patience. Radford Dale Renaissance of Chenin Blanc 2015 – R 295
The nose is very expressive with a top note of honeysuckle before pear, white peach, apricot and a little spice. The palate is rich and forceful, amazingly so given a relatively modest alcohol of 12.86%. Plenty of concentrated fruit, electric acidity and a pithy finish. Radford Dale Nudity Syrah 2015 – R 310
Nudity is Alex Dale’s natural wine, made without additives. It’s quite a wild, funky style, with smoky, reductive notes, firmish tannins and plenty of underlying concentration. Some may find the winemaking a little too laissez-faire, but I rather like the stony, uncompromising intensity. Drink: 2016-18. – 91/100, Tim Atkin Report 2016
