Coaxing the best from Swartland Syrah is a challenge and, while not many manage to offer freshness whilst retaining complexity, the 2015 Kolbroek has achieved just that. It offers great varietal typicity, true expression of terroir and exceptional value. Jurgen Gouws, from our first group of Young Gunners, produces his own wines under the Intellego label. Influenced by the natural wine movement, he has always produced wines that test the boundaries but his irreverent style has evolved and this exciting 2015 Syrah is more precise and much more serious than its label suggests.

Kolbroek 2015

We are impressed with the Kolbroek’s classic, very Rhône-like aromatics – fragrant, peppery spice, bright fruit, olive tapenade and shrubbery. Jurgen manages to bring us a light Syrah without sacrificing seriousness – a pitch-perfect Swartland Syrah. Drink 2017 – 2020.

This is a small-batch production with limited availability.

Tasting notes:

Intellego, Kolbroek Syrah 2015 – R 175
From two parcels of Syrah, one schist and the other gravel. 100% whole-bunch fermentation, maturation lasting nine months in 500-litre barrels. The nose is wonderfully intricate with notes of red fruit, dried herbs, purple flowers, white pepper and earth. The palate is equally pleasing – pure fruit, lemon-like acidity and lovely fine tannins. A light but extraordinarily well-defined wine. – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 94/100
