The remarkable track record of Ginny Povall’s under-the-radar Botanica Mary Delany Chenin Blanc makes it one of SA’s very best and most consistent Chenins. The 2015 has just been released and is an extraordinary wine having received four Platter’s 5-star ratingsin the last 5 years! Similarly, the 2011, 2013 (95 points), 2014 and 2015 (96 points) are some of the highest rated in Tim Atkin’s annual reports.
Produced from 50-year-old vines grown in our finest Chenin Blanc ward. The Citrusdal Mountain ward is home to our most sought-after Chenin Blancs, including the likes of Alheit Vineyards’ Magnetic North Mountain Makstok, Anthonij Rupert’s Van Lill and Visser, and The Sadie Family’s Skurfberg. These are modern Chenin Blanc benchmarks made from a finite source of high altitude old vines that speak of their unique terroir. What these wines have in common is a telltale saline minerality and purity of fruit.
The Botanica is the last of these famous 2015 Chenins to be released. The Botanica Mary Delany Chenin Blanc 2015 has lovely floral, stone fruit aromatics that lead to a textured palate, complex with layer upon layer of flavour. It has a distinct salinity and a taut end. A perennial Wine Cellar favourite.
Botanica, Mary Delany Chenin Blanc 2015 – R 280
This brilliant release now comes from two sources on Citrusdal Mountain (one picked early, the other late) and is consistently one of the best of the top Cape Chenins. Notes of creamy lees, understated oak, and pear and apple spice are underpinned by an oyster shell frisson that wouldn’t look out of place in Vouvray. Drink: 2016-25. – Tim Atkin MW, 96/100
