Neal Martin succeeded Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate in 2016, becoming the lead taster for Bordeaux, Burgundy and South Africa. Martin’s focus on the world’s top 2 wine regions under the Parker umbrella makes him arguably the most important critic in the world. His cool demeanour, articulate tasting notes and consistency are highly revered by his peers and the wine community alike. The Wine Advocate released the South African and Bordeaux 2016 reports on Friday.

Martin doesn’t give out points lightly and a 90+ rating indicates a world class wine. Apart from the handful of ‘near-perfect’ wines above 95 points, Martin says, ‘the word that would then pop up in my head wasbargain…There are a dozen wines in this report that vis-à-vis similar wines in other countries could easily double their prices overnight with total justification.’

Martin went on to say how he was again impressed by the quality of the white wines saying that the ‘top Chenin Blancs are world-beaters’!
