While the Grand Cru Classé echelon exudes luxurious, premium-priced and long-ageing wines, finding value in Bordeaux is much more difficult. There is a growing consensus in the wine trade about the affordable end however: Denis Durantou produces 2 of the greatest value wines in the entire region. As the proprietor of the Right-Bank superstar Château L’Eglise Clinet in Pomerol, Denis makes 2 gorgeous wines only a kilometer down the road that are sold at a tiny fraction of the price – La Chenade and Les Cruzelles.
‘Someone who has consistently delivered value from Lalande-de-Pomerol, effectively a northern extension of the world-famous plateau of Pomerol, is Denis Durantou,’ writes Jancis Robinson, ‘within sight of his base in Pomerol are the Cruzelles vines… of clay-gravel soils, virtually identical to those on the Pomerol plateau.’

La Chenade is south-west of the Les Cruzelles vineyard where there is more gravel and less clay. It contains a touch more Cabernet Franc and a little less new oak. Les Cruzelles is only slightly richer but both are approachable now and will age well for a decade. Both are made with the same care as the L’Eglise Clinet and, putting it simply, Bordeaux doesn’t get better at this price.
