Stellenbosch is Cabernet country and is increasingly realising its potential. A case in point is the brilliant 2015 Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon which completely over delivers on price. This noble variety is known for its capacity to age and shines in great vintages like 2015. This is quintessential Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the greatest modern vintages – collectable and worthy of the cellar.

Rust en Vrede 2015

Coenie Snyman, winemaker at Rust en Vrede for over a decade now, has quietly tweaked the style of their wines and brought more freshness and elegance to these reds while, most importantly, retaining their power.

Focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, Rust en Vrede’s ‘red wine only’ approach has allowed them to fine tune their vineyards while keeping things simple and focused. The Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 is a vibrant, powerful and youthful wine which is so typical of the backward 2015 vintage. It demands a bit of time in the cellar and the glass before it will show its true wares. The tannins are textured, coated and lingering. Best in a few years’ time but enjoy it over the next decade and a half.

Tasting notes:

Rust en Vrede, Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 – R 255
Brooding at first with power reverberating through the wine, but a day later it opens up, revealing classic cassis and graphite notes laced with ripe tobacco leaf and savoury, herbal detail. The 2015 vintage ensures ripe, coated and refined tannins. Whilst still very young, this classy wine over delivers and is easily worth double the price. From the stellar 2015 vintage, this is a must for your cellar. Drink 2018 – 2025. – James Pietersen (August 2017)
