The Nederberg Charity Auction, which is held every year once the main auction has come to an end, raised an astounding R 1,01 million for this year’s charity beneficiary, sp(i)eel. Roland Peens, who directs the annual charity auction, said how he couldn’t ‘thank the generous bidders enough for their incredible support’.
sp(i)eel, a local non-profit organization, offers an alternative to psychological therapy in the form of creative arts therapy to communities throughout the Cape Winelands. The co-founder of sp(i)eel, Marlize Swanepoel, was left speechless after Roland’s hammer went down on the donated wines at R 505,000. To everyone’s surprise, Distell agreed to match the total sum, doubling the charity donation and bringing the total to R 1,01 million.
‘We are overwhelmed by the response,’ a shocked Marlize managed to say, ‘and because we work with the health and wellbeing of children, their parents and teachers, it is possible for [these] contributions to have a lifelong impact on the farming communities in the Winelands.’
The Auction Manager Dalene Steyn hopes that this year’s unprecedented donation will set a new benchmark for future beneficiaries. To read the full story, visit www.nederburgauction.co.za.
