The wines of Burgundy continue to gather interest around the world, making affordable offerings more difficult than ever to come by. Thankfully one of our all-time favourites, the Meursault superstar Domaine des Comtes Lafon, invested in the unheralded Mâcon appellation almost 20 years ago.

When Dominique Lafon acquired his first vines in Mâcon, it was a significant gesture, a statement that the world should start taking this region more seriously,’ wrote Neal Martin and went on to say, ‘anyone who has tasted with Dominique Lafon in Meursault and Mâcon will know that his passion is shared equally between both.’

We have limited amounts of the prestigious Domaine des Comtes Lafon available but it’s the Mâcons that should not be missed.

Just an hour south of the famous Côte d’Or, the wines of Mâcon show more sunshine in the glass but are often diluted and somewhat simple. However, Dominique’s Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcons offer incredible tension, fine depth and serious concentration that gives age-ability and length. Certified organic and raised in large-format oak, the beautifully elegant and finely-tuned 2015 single vineyards require a few years to show their best. They offer spectacular value.

The 2016 Mâcon-Villages Blanc is more approachable in style with little evidence of oak ageing. It is crisp, taut and fragrant and offers the signature Lafon magic that has made the domaine so famous.

We have just 90 bottles of the delicious Mâcon-Villages and 15 single vineyard mixed 6-packs available. These wines are a must for any Burgundy lover.

Tasting notes:

Héritiers du Comte Lafon, Mâcon-Villages Blanc 2016 – R 295
The Mâcon-Villages is more of a Chablis-style with crisp apples and oyster shell notes. The nose is finely tuned with a touch of signature reduction, some spice and florals. Taut but textured, it offers beautiful depth and a line of acidity that carries great length and flavour. This is an extremely classy white Burgundy and will be great now with hard cheeses, or kept for a few years to gather complexity. – Roland Peens (October 2017)

Héritiers du Comte Lafon, Mâcon Clos de la Crochette 2015 – R 450
The 2015 Mâcon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette has an enticing bouquet with hints of almond and walnut infusing the citrus fruit, nicely defined with good lift, quite generous compared to others. The palate is well balanced, a little more rounded in texture, with fresh citrus lemon and lime on the entry, it comes across as being quite saline toward the finish that feels lilting and nonchalant, so I recommend enjoying this over the next six or seven years. – Wine Advocate, 90/100

Héritiers du Comte Lafon, Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine 2015 – R 395
The 2015 Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine has a lovely apple blossom and limestone-scented bouquet that unfurls wonderfully in the glass but retains its elegance. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, saline in the mouth with a precise and detailed finish. This is an excellent, quite nuanced wine that might be holding something up its sleeve for later. – Wine Advocate, 90/100

Héritiers du Comte Lafon, Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches 2015 – R 450
The 2015 Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches has a clean and precise bouquet, quite chalky and well defined, a more neutral take on Mâcon that expresses more of the terroir rather than fruit. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, not quite as detailed as I was expecting after the aromatics but with satisfying weight on the spicy, quite sappy finish. – Wine Advocate, 90/100
