The Silverthorn Jewel Box 2013 must be one of the finest sparkling wines on the market right now. Previous accolades include Tim Atkin’s 2016 ‘Sparkling Wine of the Year’ for the 2010 vintage, while the The Green Man 2011 won the trophy for the ‘Best Sparkling Wine’ at the 2014 Six Nations Wine Challenge.

Previously Cellar Master at Steenberg, John Loubser is now focusing solely on Silverthorn. With more than 220 sparkling wine producers in SA, Silverthorn’s latest limited releases confirm their prowess, craftsmanship and the fact that their Cap Classiques have fast become some of our very best.

The Jewel Box 2013, 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, is the star. It’s a complex sparkling wine that spends almost 5 years on the lees and offers hints of dried strawberry, classic brioche notes and a lovely, fine mousse. It’s rich and broadly textured with a bone-dry and saline finish; a great food wine that will reward cellaring. It is a steal at this price.

The Green Man, a fine Blanc de Blancs, is the wine that Silverthorn is best known for. The latest The Green Man 2015 spent 24 months on the lees and 3 months in the bottle before being released. This is a crisp, focused wine with a wonderful mousse that coats a detailed and linear acidity.

 Tasting notes:

Silverthorn, Jewel Box 2013 – R 295
Oozing sophistication and elegance, the 2013 sparkler is a glorious explosion of rich flavour, soft green apples mixing with salt-edged almonds and ginger spice, all building to hugely satisfying yeasty/bready finish. 60/40 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, 60% wooded. – Platter’s Wine Guide 2018, 4.5*

Silverthorn, The Green Man 2015 – R 250
Fresh aromas of green apple and Acacia blossom backed up by subtle hints of minerality and whiffs of freshly baked brioche. Well balanced with an elegant structure, fine mousse which imparts a gentle explosion of bubbles on the palate and a long finish. – Silverthorn Wines

Silverthorn, The Genie Rose NV – R 220
Gently spiced aromas on this NV rosé sparkling from the Shiraz, giving extra gingery fillip to red-berried fruit while 18 months on lees adds almonds and cream in delicious mouthful. – Platter’s Wine Guide 2018, 4*
