Tasted in late July at the Sadie Family Wines Ou Wingerd launch, the much-anticipated maiden release of the single-distilled Blitsem Witblits 2017 is now available.
Made from old vine Muscat de Alexandria, aka Hanepoot, Witblits is a clear spirit made from grape skins and has a colourful, almost 200-year-old history in SA. Eben Sadie has a passion for spirits and nurturing our local old vine heritage. For Eben, it was logical to extend the value and longevity of some of these old vineyards by using them to produce something unique, something inspired, and so came about the Sadie Family Blitsem Witblits. Making use of the potstill production method and shown the meticulous care that we have come to expect from him, Eben has crafted something truly special, more akin to fine grappa than the checkered history of ‘witblits’ suggests.
We are very impressed with its poised and extremely pure nose which leads on to a subtle, long and crystalline finish. Served chilled, the Blitsem Witblits 2017 proves an inspired pairing with charcuterie and pickled herring. Because it is only single-distilled, and not continuously distilled like grappa, it offers an unadulterated expression of the vines and the vintage. It is distilled to 65% alc. and then blended down to 55% alc. This is a must for serious drink trolleys. Very limited quantities were produced.
Sadie Family, Blitsem Witblits 2017 – R 750
This is the story of yesterday’s hero who has returned. Witblits, also known as ‘white lightning’, is a distillation of Hanepoot (Muscat de Alexandria) grape skins in a very pure, single distillation. Unlike grappa that is distilled in a vertical continuous column still, witblits is a single distillation which is just very slightly broken down with water. It is therefore a pure vintage product and an incredibly fragrant grape spirits; a whole new dimension. We love the product for it is literally a direct expression of the vineyard in the form of spirits. No instruments… just distilled on taste! – Sadie Family Wines
