World famous German artist, Gerard Richter, has been selected as the designer of the new Mouton Rothschild 2015 label. His selection continues Mouton’s tradition of commissioning bespoke artwork for its grand vin. It has been doing this for every vintage since 1945 and he follows in the hallowed footsteps of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon.
He is known for his ‘photo paintings’ which combine photography and painting and this abstract style has been likened to the style of Picasso. Richter is most famous for his 1986 painting, ‘Abstraktes Bild’ which set a record auction price for a work by a living artist when it sold for £30.4 million in 2015.
This year’s label was created using a process titled ‘Flux’ which is described by the artist as being, ‘both random and carefully prepared’.
