Young Gunners Stephanie Wiid and Etienne Terblanche burst onto the scene last year with their maiden-release 2016 Thistle & Weed Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc which garnered a Platter’s 5 star. The 2017 proves that this was no fluke after receiving a whopping 96/100 points from respected local critic Christian Eedes.
‘If the maiden-vintage 2016 of Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc… was good, then the follow-up 2017 is breath-taking.’
– Christian Eedes, 96/100
The Thistle & Weed Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc 2017 has the vintage’s great fruit purity balanced by clever restraint, composure and focus on the palate. Just released, this small six-barrel cuvée is in limited supply and is a fine example of SA Chenin at a great price.
From 61-year-old, meticulously nurtured Paarl vineyards, this specific parcel is gently whole-bunch pressed and then naturally fermented in old oak. Only the free-run juice was used to ensure the truest expression of the Chenin. With no evident influence from the oak, the wine is brimming with clarity and verve. Get some before it’s gone.
Please note, our delivery times will be extended by 1 – 2 days due to the upcoming public holidays.
Thistle & Weed, Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc 2017 – R 185
If the maiden-vintage 2016 of Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc from Etienne Terblanche (viticultural consultant) and Stephanie Wiid (Fairview winemaker) under their own Thistle & Weed label was good, then the follow-up 2017 is breath-taking.
Grapes from a 1956 Paarl vineyard, winemaking involved spontaneous fermentation and maturation lasting eight months in third-fill oak barrels. The nose shows a herbal top note before citrus, apple and peach. The palate is one those that are intensely flavoured but not weighty – it’s manages to be both startlingly pure and intricate at the same time, different flavours coming at you in waves. A wine of particular harmony. – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100
