2016 was yet another frost-reduced vintage in Burgundy and prices continue to rise. ‘Wine used to be sold in cases of a dozen bottles. Six-bottle cases have now become common. But three-bottle cases of 2016 burgundy are anticipated,’ says Jancis Robinson, ‘the message is clear: the 2016 vintage is tantalisingly rare.’
Looking back at the 2015 reds, they are very good indeed. Their obvious ripeness offers dazzling flavour and early drinkability but some may prefer the 2016s; a more classic vintage with clarity, finesse and a detailed structure. The 2016 whites are possibly superior to the 2015s across the board and offer a firmer acidity and structure.

Thankfully, the moderately stronger Rand allows us to offer the Wine Cellar favourite, Chavy-Chouet Bourgogne Pinot Noir La Taupe 2016, at almost 20% less than the 2015. In fact, we prefer it to the 2015 and, at roughly the same price as SA Pinot Noir, there is still value to be found.
You heard the story about Romaric Chavy last year. He was just 20 years old when he took over his family domaine in 2006. But then Romaric had decided on his career at an early stage, attending wine school at 12, where he would alternate between periods of study and time spent working for his godfather, Francois Mikulski. His 13 hectares is spread over great vineyards in both Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. He works the vineyards pretty much organically, with ploughing and minimal use of sprays, but is not certified. The wines are honest, pure and elegant.
Chavy-Chouet Bourgogne Pinot Noir La Taupe 2016 – R 300
La Taupe 2016 is, once again, simply delicious and offers impressive value. Interestingly, this plot was classified as AOC Pommard until the 1970s and the vines themselves were planted as early as 1935! It is more defined and classic in style than the 2015, showing a smidgeon less ripeness and tighter tannins. Pure cherry, forest floor and mineral notes overlay a tight grip. Long and poised.
