First class passengers are in for a treat this year as Emirates has raised the bar with their fine wine investments for 2018. They have a portfolio of 80 wines and Champagnes which are rotated on their various routes. They have however said that four blue-chip clarets will be poured on select routes for limited periods throughout the year.
Included amongst these blue-chip clarets is a 1998 Margaux, a 2001 Mouton Rothschild, a 2004 Cheval Blanc and a Haut-Brion. These wines have been well stored and have reached their ‘optimal maturity’. All of these wines were purchased en-primeur and then stored in Emirates’ own private cellar in Burgundy. They are rumoured to have over 4.7 million bottles of wines stored there.
To fully appreciate these wines, they will be paired with carefully created dishes and presented in completely revamped glassware. This year’s collection was, in fact, launched 40,000 feet in the air when Arnaud de Laforcade, commercial director of Cheval Blanc, gave first class passengers a surprise tasting of the 2004 and 2006 vintages.
