Neil Ellis has firmly staked its claim as the best Stellenbosch Cabernet producer with the back-to-back success of their Neil Ellis Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon in the annual Winemag Cabernet Sauvignon reports. The 2014 was the best Cabernet in the 2017 report and the 2015 was the best Stellenbosch Cabernet in the 2018 report.

The 2015 Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon shimmers with class and elegance. From the cool Cabernet vineyards in Stellenbosch, these great sites produce a unique wine with deep cassis fruit, red berry bounce and a herbaceous, fresh lift. The 2015 was included in our 2015 VIP basket and, considering the success of the past two vintages and the equity of the Neil Ellis name, this keenly priced wine is a must for the fine wine collector.

From a wine trade / merchant point of view, one could reasonably expect the quality of wines included in the VIP 2015 Fund to age and certainly improve incrementally for easily 10+ years… and many on the list for certainly 20 years plus.’ – Greg Sherwood MW

Neil Ellis has created a legacy. The winery is now a fully family-run affair with the Ellis children taking over various roles in the business. Warren Ellis heads up the winemaking with great success and, while building on their past, we can see a marked shift towards greater refinement and finesse.

Tasting notes:

Neil Ellis, Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 – R 365
Matured for 18 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, 100% new. Black fruit, just a hint of fresh herbs and attractive oak on the nose. The palate is full but balanced – excellent fruit expression, fresh acidity and firm but fine tannins. Intensely flavoured and very long on the finish, this is built to last. – Winemag.co.za, Prescient Cabernet Report 2018, 94/100

Notes on the 2014 vintage:
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured for 18 months in French oak, 100% new. Red and black fruit, some leafiness, pencil shavings and vanilla on the nose. The palate meanwhile possesses good weight and texture pure fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Seamlessly assembled. – Winemag.co.za, Prescient Cabernet Report 2017, 92/100
