The 2015 Paul Sauer became SA’s most sought-after redwhen Tim Atkin MW awarded it his first 100/100 score in the New World. We are excited to release the follow-up 2016 vintage.
2016 was a trying vintage as the Western Cape drought took a firm grip and extreme heat interrupted the growing season. ‘The drier conditions did give a high level of concentration, but we had to work very carefully on the extraction to get the right balance,’ notes legendary winemaker Abrie Beeslaar, ‘the Paul Sauer 2016 is very typical of the style. It is quite perfumed and elegant.’
The 2016 Kanonkop Paul Saueris 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot, clocking in at 13,84% alcohol and seasoned, as always, for 24 months in 100% new Nevers oak. The wine is currently enveloped with sweet cherry fruit and silky new oak, requiring at least another year to show its full spectrum of detail. Although concentrated and powerful, it is softer and more juicy than the structured 2015. The Kanonkop pedigreeaffirms at least a decade or two of ageing, although we believe it will drink well before the 2015, 2014 and even 2012.
We expect the new vintage to sell out immediately on release. Please note, orders will be shipped from the 24th of June.
Deep and broody full of sweet grilled herbs, cured meats, bloody meat and earthy red currants with bright cherry acids, chalky tannins and a classically dry, mineral finish with just a kiss of blueberry rock candy on the finish. Thoroughly distinguished expression of this South African benchmark classic. – Greg Sherwood MW, 95+/100
