Tasted blind in Cape Town and Johannesburg, alongside Bordeaux greats like Calon-Ségur and Valandraud, and local hard-hitters like Kanonkop Paul Sauer and Rustenberg Peter Barlow, the 2015 Thelema Merlot Reserve was crowned the winner of Wine Cellar’s 2015 Bordeaux vs SA taste-off!

Produced using only the very best parcels, the limited Thelema Merlot Reserve 2015 is an excellent example of great Merlot. It wowed tasters with its complex, Bordeaux-like nose leading to silky, sumptuous tannins and a plush finish. As one of only 3 Platter’s 5-star Merlots, it’s already nearing sold-out status.

Thelema burst onto the scene in the late 1980s and, as confirmed at the Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auction, it has become one of SA’s best modern-day wine brands. Merlot is SA’s bestselling red wine category and, being one of the country’s Merlot-producing pioneers, Thelema’s 2015 Merlot Reserve is certainly one of the finest. That being said, it’s still extremely well priced at R355 per bottle.

Tasting notes:

Thelema, Merlot Reserve 2015
All-new oak in 2015, selection of special vineyard parcels, & it shows in the fruit intensity, layers of spicing, sleek structure. Like 2014 (4.5 stars, 92 pts), impressive, involving, with a great future ahead. – Platter’s Guide 2019, 95/100 (5 stars)
