Rüdger van Wyk burst onto the winemaking scene when he won the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2018. His passion for wine was ignited by the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé programme, as well as a life-changing harvest in Burgundy, and the Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve 2020 showcases his incredible talent.

Rüdger is now winemaker at Stark-Condé and Kara-Tara is his own label, focusing on cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve is unlike any other South African Pinot. Nuanced and elegant, it displays a haunting array of florals, red berry, earth, whiffs of iron, blood orange, and meat spice. The core shimmers with reined in red cherry, constantly shapeshifting and drawing the drinker in to explore its uniqueness. It’s a wine that demands contemplation and attention. There is a weightless intensity and fresh, savoury thread to the lingering finish.

This is a barrel selection of Pinot Noir, clone PN115, sourced from an isolated vineyard in the Overberg. The vineyards are 160 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains that are often covered in cooling fog. The Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve 2020 is 20% whole-bunch fermented and spent 14 months in small French oak, 20% of which was new.

Rüdger sums it up best: ‘I think it combines both the characteristics of a unique and consistent terroir with intensity and structure, which you look for in great wines.’

Tasting Notes

Kara-Tara Chardonnay 2021

‘The 2020 vintage of the Chardonnay is a revelation. 82% of grapes were sourced from the Overberg and 18% from a 40-year-old vineyard in Paarl, while winemaking involved 50% fermentation in stainless steel tank and 50% neutral oak before maturation lasting nine months. The nose shows a hint of reduction before citrus, floral perfume and spice while the palate combines power with energy – great fruit purity and racy acidity before a savoury finish. Very well proportioned – intensely flavoured without being overly weighty. Plenty of Wow! factor.’ – – Christian Eedes, 95/100

Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve 2020

‘From a single vineyard in the Overberg, planted to rocky shale soils and clone PN115. It immediately impresses with a nose like no other: Gentle and slowly evolving, it’s extremely complex with notes of damson, reined in red cherry, earth, and has a thread of savoury interest that weaves through it. Layers of bruised flowers, lavender, violets, crushed leaves, and attractive sandalwood add an almost haunting quality to the bouquet. The perfumed nose is balanced by a granular tannin density, coated with dark cherry and spice. The acidity is fresh and underscored by a lingering, saline end. Certainly the most unique Pinot Noir in SA.’– James Pietersen
