Wine Cellar Insiders’ March 2024

R 1,101 PER PACK – FREE DELIVERY

Our first pick for this month’s value case is the Black Elephant Vintners Three Men in a Tub Red Blend 2020, from the self-proclaimed ‘Misfits Of The Wine Industry’. Moving to Portugal, Anselmo Mendes Muros Antigos Escolha 2022 is a ‘fresh and lively blend that shows great in its youth’ (Wine Advocate), while Niepoorts’ Drink Me Tinto 2021 is perfect for a Friday afternoon around the braai. The Remhoogte Free to be Syrah 2021 offers blackcurrant, cloves and violets in spades, and we love Testalonga El Bandito I Wish I was a Ninja 2023 – it’s quirky label is sure to get the conversation going. Last up, the Pink Valley Rosé 2022 is ‘a grown up pink, with sour cherry and rosehip flavours’ (Tim Atkin MW).

GD Vajra & Marengo 2022 Dolcettos

R 295 PER BOTTLE

We had these vibrant, value reds at our New Arrivals Walkaround tasting last week and they were superb. ‘The finest Dolcettos deliver the same terroir-driven, artisan spirit of their more famous brethren, but at far more accessible prices that make them great choices for everyday drinking at the dinner table,’ says Antonio Galloni of Vinous. We bought everything we could get our hands on and you should too!

Mullineux Syrah 2021

R 460 PER BOTTLE

We have been following this wine since day one and it is by far the most powerful, complete and compelling release. Its sense of depth and calm, inward structure affirms once again that this Syrah is very much at the core of what the Mullineuxs aim to achieve. The great 2021 vintage shows complex and layered aromatics that slowly give way to a brooding, crushed stone force. The palate is youthful, quiet-fruited and laced with spice – it’s surefooted to the very end

Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Villages Blanc 2022

R 495 PER BOTTLE

At this price, Burgundian Chardonnay from one of the masters should make everyone sit up and take note! ‘Mâconnais growers are producing better wines than ever and they should be celebrating long overdue recognition,’ writes Neal Martin. Dominque Lafon’s 2022 Mâcon-Villages contains fruit from Viré-Clessé, Uchizy, Viré, Chardonnay and Bussières, including grapes declassified from single-vineyard sites – all biodynamically farmed. It represents ‘spectacular value’, proclaims Charles Curtis MW of Decanter.
