Mosel (Riesling) Magic from Clemens Busch

If ever there was a time to drink white wines in winter, this is it. Riesling is the ultimate crystalline wine for crisp weather. And what could be better with hearty, roasted, rich, spicy, comforting dishes than magical Mosel Riesling?

Both the Clemens Busch Trocken (dry) and Kabinett (off-dry) are cult classics. The wines are tremendously pureprecise and multilayered, giving notes of apple, peach, wet stone, smoke, and ripe, salty lemon. While their dry wines are some of the finest, long-ageing Rieslings in all of Germany, their off-dry Kabinetts are ‘picture-book… at a very reasonable price’, says the Wine Advocate.

Rita and Clemens Busch are the absolute pioneers (Vinous) of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Mosel. They’ve farmed their vines in Pünderich organically since 1985 and obtained biodynamic certification in 2007.

Most of Clemens Busch’s production comes from the famous Grosses Gewächs (similar to Grand Cru) vineyard, Pündericher Marienburg – 80% of which is planted to old vines. Their vineyards are based on three types of slate – red, blue and grey – each imparting different characteristics and styling. All these Rieslings have the typical Mosel lightness of being. They are concentrated and elegant but electric! Weather the storm with these whites, and view the entire range here.

Tasting Notes:

Clemens Busch Riesling Trocken 2022

‘The 2022 Riesling trocken is harvested on either side of the Mosel: the village-side sites plus the pre-harvest from the Marienburg side. The rather shy nose has lovely pear and lemon notes. The lithe palate is more forthcoming with fruit, showing tender pear, lemon, and slight white pepper. A dry, very lemon-pronounced finish. (Dry)’ – Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous
