Burgundy bewitches. Even with the changing climate and climbing of prices – whether it is a Bourgogne Blanc or a Grand Cru, Burgundy’s charm, allure and ethereal qualities continue to keep it at the top of wine lovers’ minds and palates.

We’re excited to kick off our Burgundy week with the master of Meursault, Dominique Lafon’s, very own Mâconnais project, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon.

‘Wines produced in the Mâconnais compete qualitatively with those of the Côte d’Or at a fraction of the price’ exclaims Decanter. Dominique Lafon who has recently retired from his family Domaine, Comte Lafon, is now focusing solely on his personal project, Héritiers du Comte Lafon, which he created in 1999, in order to express the potential of this oft-underrated region.

The 2022 vintage has been hailed as an exceptional vintage by numerous critics, with Tim Atkin noting that the whites from the Mâconnais were ‘riveting’ and Staurt Pigott from jamessuckling.com commenting ‘with confidence that 2022 is the best vintage for Burgundy in a very long time’.

‘Juicy and attractive,’ (Jasper Morris) the Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Villages 2023 displays bright fruit, citrus notes and a fresh acidity making it a charming introduction to the range.

Lush green grapevines stretch along rows under a bright blue sky, with a lone tree visible in the distance on a sunny day.

The Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette 2022 is expressive and textured, with pronounced lemon and yellow apple notes that are complemented by ‘a peachy, seductive finish.’ (Neal Martin). A ‘delightful single-vineyard’ (Decanter) the Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Bussières Le Monsard 2022 is a layered and complex wine which captures the opulence of its unique terroir while maintaining a lively tension.

Made from high elevation sites and aged in used oak, the Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine 2022 shows ripe stone fruit with some yellow fruit notes while a persistent acid balances the wine beautifully. The Saint-Véran 2022 shows ‘Punches above its weight.’ (Vinous) with its seductive and concentrated palate.

Displaying ‘juicy acidity and good focus’ (Jancisrobinson.com) the Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches 2022 is refined, offering a saline minerality which lingers on the finish.

In 1999, Dominique Lafon, who is ‘Sometimes, and plausibly, described as the world’s best producer of white wine,’ (Decanter) expanded his expertise to the Mâconnais region by establishing Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon. This estate is cultivated biodynamically and produces wines that reflect both the unique Mâconnais climate and Lafon’s commitment to quality.

These wines showcase the best of the Mâconnais, combining Lafon’s meticulous winemaking with the region’s unique terroir to deliver wines of precision and undeniable drinkability.
