In the early 2000s, Gyles Webb – owner of the iconic Thelema Mountain Vineyards in Stellenbosch – set out in search of distinctly cooler terroir. His journey led him to a small apple orchard in the picturesque Elgin Valley, where his vision of crafting small-batch, cool-climate wines took root. We are so excited to offer you a sleek set of wines that are utterly delicious!

The Sauvignon Blanc 2024 captures the electric freshness of the Elgin Valley. At just R140 a bottle, it’s vibrant, precise, and irresistible.

‘It has become one of my perennial summertime favourites,’ Greg Sherwood voices happily about the Grenache Rosé 2024 – it’s the ultimate apéritif.

A tranquil landscape featuring vineyards in autumn colors, reflected in a calm pond surrounded by lush greenery and distant hills.

‘Elgin is not just about cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Riesling — this fiddle plays an array of fabulous tunes‘, notes Greg Sherwood.

With dark cherries and briny olive tapenade, the Grenache 2023 paints a Mediterranean picture. A perfect match for herb-roasted lamb or grilled Mediterranean vegetables.

The Pinot Noir 2023 nearly made us fall off our chairs – nuanced and detailed with Elgin’s signature smokey lift, its energy is reminiscent of Nerello Mascalese from Sicily. At just R270, it offers exceptional value.

Described by Tim Atkin as ‘the best Syrah yet under the Sutherland label’, the Syrah 2022 impresses with 30% new oak and 30% whole-bunch fermentation adding depth and freshness in spades.

Finally, the Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 delivers blackcurrant and plum with fine-grained tannins that leave a persistent finish. Still youthful, it encapsulates the elegance and structure of this cool-climate site.

Sutherland Vineyards is marked by varietal precision and purity of fruit. We highly suggest you tuck in for this summer season!

Tasting Notes:

Sutherland Sauvignon Blanc 2024

‘Beautiful purity of limes and ripe gooseberry, with tropical, floral and fine herbal notes. This is cool climate Sauvignon Blanc – vibrant, mineral, elegant, balanced and delicate, with a long, layered and complex finish.’ – Winemaker

Sutherland Grenache Rosé 2024

‘Rudi Schultz makes this Elgin rosé with direct-pressed Grenache, fermenting and ageing the result in stainless steel. Zesty flavours of redcurrant and wild strawberry lead you into a pithy, mouth-watering, bone-dry finish. Just the thing for summer quaffing. 2025-27.’ – Tim Atkin, 90/100

Sutherland Grenache 2023

‘One of a trio of Grenaches from Sutherland, this comes from a block that was planted in Elgin in 2005. Firm and comparatively serious, it has decent structure and backbone, plum and redcurrant fruit, a savoury undertone and negligible oak. 2025-29.’ – Tim Atkin, 90/100

Sutherland Pinot Noir 2023

‘This Pinot Noir was aged in French oak barrels for 9 months and shows pure strawberry fruit aromas and lovely perfumed spice and earthy characters on the nose. The wine is wonderfully balanced with a long, refined finish.’ – Winemaker

Sutherland Syrah 2022

‘The best Syrah yet under the Sutherland label, this is very much a cool climate style. Now fermented with 30% whole bunches (up from 10%), it’s savoury, meaty and well structured, with layers of bramble, tapenade and fynbos, subtle 30% new oak and a twist of white pepper. 2025-30.’ – Tim Atkin, 93/100

Sutherland Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

‘Deep ruby in colour, the 2023 vintage shows classic Cabernet aromas of ripe blackcurrant, plum, and subtle graphite. The palate is elegant yet concentrated, with layers of dark fruit complemented by hints of cedar and spice. Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide structure and balance, leading to a long, persistent finish.’ – Winemaker
