The ‘nimble’ and ‘plush’ Terrazas de los Andes Malbec Reserva 2022 ‘bursts with fruity richness’ praises Vinous.

Terrazas de los Andes is located in Mendoza, Argentina and makes high altitude expressions of the country’s signature variety, Malbec – a variety that has performed so well in the country that plantings have increased approximately 350% between 1995 and 2018.

This wine uses more than 100 parcels from regeneratively farmed estate vineyards with elevations between 1070 and 1650 meters! An impressive terroir snapshot of some of the best sub-appellations in the region, the 2022 Malbec Reserva featured on the Wine Spectators Top Ten Value wines last year. The structure of the wine is seamless, with soft yet grippy tannins that coat your palate, and a refreshing acidity that provides contrast and lift to ripe blueberry, bramble and plum flavours alongside nuances of violets and wild herbs.

The quality level at this price is superb. For red wine lovers who are looking for something bold, while having the vibrancy to drink on a summers day – this is for you!

Argentina’s Malbec history descends from pre-phylloxera French cuttings, preserving diverse, high-quality genetics refined by massal selection. The poorer soils at higher altitudes allow for naturally low yielding vines, which, alongside the unique clones, produce grapes with smaller berries than Malbec vines in France, with intense flavours and well-integrated tannins.

Terrazas de los Andes map each block of vineyards and adapt their farming practices to the variation in terroir. This wine sees 15-20 days of maceration on the skins and 12 months in older French oakNo attention to detail is spared, which allows the biodiversity of their terroir to shine through their wines.

The quality of Argentinian wine in general has risen tremendously over the past few decades and Terrazas de los Andes have been at the forefront of the country’s wine movement, pioneering research in the vineyards and the cellar.

Tasting Notes:

‘The 2022 Malbec Reserva is sourced from Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley, Mendoza. Aged for up to 12 months in oak barrels, this purple-red wine offers reductive-like aromas of plums, violets and wild herbs, complemented by cedar and pennyroyal notes. Dry and juicy on the palate, the nimble flow contributes to a cheerful mouthfeel, enhanced by slightly plush tannins. A modern expression of Mendoza-style Malbec, the 2022 bursts with fruity richness. 2024 – 2032.’ – Joaquín Hildago, Vinous, 91/100

‘Notes of hibiscus and orange blossoms join the fresh core of this fragrant version, which is silky in feel, delivering a pure beam of raspberry and cherry flavors. The finish is satisfyingly juicy, with baking spice accents around soft tannins.’ – Wine Spectator, 91/100
