Iconic Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2023: A collector’s favourite

Kanonkop is regarded as South Africa’s equivalent of a First Growth. Their remarkable track record spans more than 50 years and, according to the Kanonkop team, the 2023 Paul Sauer is very similar to the lauded 1997 vintage.

On tasting the 2023 release earlier this week, we were impressed by the classic, deeply nostalgic and well-integrated new oak – a mark of great winemaking. The wine shows concentrated dark cherry, cassis and bay leaf notes, fine tannins and a layered palate with incredible balance and elegance – all with just 13% alcohol. It will mature in your cellar for decades to come.

With 100% new oak for 24 months, the magic of this single vineyard is hard to miss. Paul Sauer is one of the most consistent offerings from Kanonkop, and certainly worthy of its benchmark status. And if you’re looking for more immediate drinking pleasure, the 2023 is ideal beside a fire, surrounded by your favourite people.

Please note this is a pre-release offer; the wine will be available for delivery and collection from 3 July 2026.

Tasting Notes:

Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2023

‘Deep ruby red colour. A classic, perfumed nose packed with youthful red berries, blackcurrant and vibrant cherry, layered with pencil shavings, fresh cedar wood and delicate floral notes. As the wine opens, subtle toastiness emerges alongside an intriguing, wild, fynbos character and notes of lavender and saltbush. The palate is refined with linear tannins providing structure and balance. A complex, multi-layered wine with a beautiful structure, balanced acidity, and a long, fresh finish.’ – Winemaker
