What more can be said about husband-and-wife team Chris and Andrea Mullineux? Since their maiden 2008 vintage, the Platter Winery of the Year Mullineuxs have produced sensational wines that seem to get better with each release. Experimentation with single vineyards, strengthening relationships with Swartland farmers as well as having an international understanding of wine has placed them at the cutting edge of our industry.
The 2010 Syrah was Platter Wine of the Year and the 2011 received five stars and 92 points from the Wine Advocate. The 2012, however, is regarded by the Mullineuxs, and the team here at Wine Cellar, as their finest yet, further suggesting the greatness of the 2012 vintage. It is magically rich and pure, yet fashioned with moderate alcohol, subtle oak nuances and incredible freshness. This is benchmark Syrah at its best and it will sell out swiftly.
The latest vintages of the Straw Wine and Mullineux White are also available, though the former is extremely limited. The Straw Wine is the Wine Advocate’s most praised SA bottling (2011 – 97 points) and the 2013 once again balances unctuous sweetness with freshness and finesse.
The White 2012, Swartland blend, naturally has a Chenin backbone and is starting to build its own niche following, similar to that of Bordeaux Blanc or Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. ‘Broad and tangy and complete…Deep and rich and concentrated,’ says Jancis Robinson awarding 17.5/20.
On the everyday drinking front, the Kloof Street Chenin and Rouge continue to gain huge favour. At well under R100 per bottle, they are among the top value wines on the market today.
The minute volume single-vineyard wines (Schist, Granite etc) will only be released in the fourth quarter of 2014. Let us know of your interest as they will likely sell on allocation.
