Glorious Glenelly 2015s – an absolute steal

From the hailed 2015 vintage, we’re delighted to offer you an exclusive ex-cellar release of two superb wines. Glenelly’s Glass Collection Cabernet Franc and Merlot are a fraction of the price of other top reds from 2015 – one of Stellenbosch’s greatest red wine vintages in recent memory. Considering the quality of fruit and Glenelly’s upward trajectory, they’re an absolute steal.

The Cabernet Franc is pure class with hallmark pencil shavings and graphite. The palate is what really impresses here, with a depth of fruit and weight that you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Though delicious now, its fine structure sets it up for another decade of ageing.

The Merlot has a cool, red-fruited centre and a savoury bay leaf edge that adds herbal complexity. It’s produced from Merlot vines that have the lowest number of sunlight hours on the property, resulting in a great homogeneity of ripeness that’s rarely achieved locally. There’s no better mature Merlot in SA at this price!

In 2003, Glenelly was acquired by Madame May de Lencquesaing of Bordeaux’s Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Her vision was to transform the property into one of the finest in Stellenbosch, and Glenelly has certainly repaid this faith. Inflationary pressure, as well as price repositioning for most of South Africa’s top producers, means finding value is becoming more difficult. But look no further – these are wines to stock up on by the caseload.

Tasting Notes:

Glenelly Glass Collection Cabernet Franc 2015

‘The second release of a Cabernet Franc under the Glass Collection label is a serious, age worthy affair: firm and quite sturdy, it has plenty of acidity, notes of graphite and damson and supporting oak.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 91/100

Glenelly Glass Collection Merlot 2015

‘This pure Merlot sees 20% new oak and has the finesse and depth that are so typical of Simonsberg reds. Mint and dried herb aromas segue into a leafy, black cherry and cassis-like palate with deftly integrated wood.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 90/100
