Limited Luddite Shiraz 2021 – a stunning rendition

The Luddite Shiraz is ‘something of a cult red, says Tim Atkin MW, and the latest release is a wine of superb refinement, nuance and finesse. From the 2021 vintage – hailed as one of the greatest from South Africa – this release is a celebration of power. Followers will be impressed with the trademark fruit weight and structural depth, while newcomers to Luddite will appreciate its complexity and Southern Rhône breadth and charm.

With lifted aromatics of violets, rose petals, and spice, the wine shows freshness and detail, with energy in spades. It’s a serious Shiraz that’s layered and mineral to end. Although it may be like picking a favourite child, Niels Verburg says the 2021 is his favourite vintage so far!

Always limited, always cellarworthy and holding its own in a lineup with top wines from the Southern Rhône, what else could you ask for? This is Bot River Shiraz at its finest.

Niels and Penny Verburg, with their daughter Alice, have established a brand of excellence while continuing to be the most charismatic and warm people you’ll meet. The Luddite 2021 offers an exciting counterpoint to the Syrahs from the Swartland and Stellenbosch, with a small percentage of Mourvédre and Cabernet Sauvignon adding extra complexity and depth.
