Meerlust Gold: SA’s best Merlot

Jul 11, 2024 | All, Local wines | 0 comments

2021 is a sensational vintage that stands out for its elegance, refinement and tannic complexity. The latest release to confirm this is the Meerlust Merlot 2021, aka Meerlust Gold. The team have certainly struck gold with this wine – producing possibly the best Merlot in SA!

A recent visit to Meerlust, now under the direction of Wim Truter, showed just how well the variety can perform on this property. To say we were impressed is an understatement. A tasting of future Merlot samples vs other components proved that the variety is at the heart of great recent Rubicons. The Merlot samples showed power that’s reminiscent of Right Bank Bordeaux, but with a notable Stellenbosch thumbprint.

The magic of the Meerlust Merlot is attributed to maturing vineyards. Excellent sun exposure and viticulture practices ensure early ripening – maximising the estate’s cool maritime situation. With alluring, truly South African aromatics followed by a finely tuned palate, this is a brilliant rendition of Merlot. The 2021 bottling is much smaller than previous vintages, so this one is limited.

Tasting Notes:

Meerlust Merlot 2021

‘An inviting nose of dark plum, concentrated dark cherry with an overlay of Cape Fynbos, especially Buchu notes and cool earth. Maritime in the best sense, the beautifully integrated oak, fine, ripe tannins and linear structure make for a wine that’s classic in style with brooding fruit, yet fresh fragrance. The 2021 has a complex, powerful Merlot character that’s rarely experienced in Stellenbosch. Possibly the best Merlot I have tasted from SA – a bold statement but the intrinsics are undeniable. It should be long lasting.’ – James Pietersen, May 2024
