Quickly established as one of the finest white wines in South Africa is the Anysbos Disdit from the 2023 vintage. It is a Chenin Blanc dominated blend with Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne, receiving Christian Eedes’ highest possible rating. This wine is bright and vibrant with incredible aromatics. The Disdit charms and seduces immediately with a palate of such incredible balance and unique character, which is a truly wonderful achievement. Wow.
Joining the stellar Anysbos Disdit, is Anysbos Tesame 2022, a red blend of which the backbone is Grenache – very much seen as the future variety for this region. It has typical brooding Bot River fruit and winemaker extraordinaire Marelise Niemann’s, deft touch and fresh vibrant elegance. A delicious wine that needs a bit of time in the bottle to show its true character.
Anysbos is situated in Bot River and belongs to Johan and Sue Heyns. Johan is now 75 years young and there is no sign of him stopping. This is a joyous project, created with passion and followed up by hard work and quiet patience. These wines are produced in small volumes and are a true reflection of this exciting terroir. Well worth seeking out.
Tasting Notes:
‘57% Chenin Blanc 17% Grenache Blanc, 27% Marsanne and 9% Roussanne. Matured for 10 months in neutral oak. Exquisite aromatics of potpourri, hay and herbs before citrus and peach while a touch of reduction adds interest. The palate is extraordinarily vivid – sappy on entry but the finish is dry and lightly grippy. An extraordinarily well-defined, harmonious wine. Alc: 13.34%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 98/100
‘55% Grenache, 33% Syrah and 12% Cinsault. Partial whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 16 months in neutral oak. Pretty aromatics of red berries, flowers, herbs and white pepper. Pure and juicy on the palate – not super-concentrated but well balanced and intricate. Bright acidity and powdery tannins. Grapes picked earlier in response to a warm, dry growing season, the alcohol a restrained 12.6%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100
