2021 was Meursault master, Dominique Lafon’s last vintage at the domaine before he ‘retired‘, handing the reins to his daughter Léa and nephew Pierre Lafon whom I met with on my visit there earlier this year.
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy resulted in brilliant, classical wines, but at a great cost. It was ‘the most challenging vintage’ Dominique and the team had ever seen with Comtes Lafon losing more than two-thirds of their crop.
There was a larger yield loss in the whites than the reds, but what remained was ripened to near perfection. The Chardonnays show scintillating energy, complemented by deep, concentrated fruit and beautiful mineralities. And they show their terroirs very clearly. ‘These are very impressive wines’, wrote Neal Martin about Dominique’s 2021s last year. And for the first time we received some of the Porusots!
For the past few years now, the reds have improved greatly, showing increased finesse with their signature graceful power year on year. ‘There is no Volnay Village this year, though the Premier Crus are well worth seeking out and are surfeit with crunchy red berry fruit.’ – Neal Martin.
I cannot recommend the Héritiers wines warmly enough – they always punch above their weight, often outshine other more famous appellations, age very well and the price to quality ration is second to none. Dominique will spend more of his time on this biodynamic project now that he has retired from Comtes Lafon’s day-to-day.
