Henri and Guillaume Boillot, father and son, have built an extraordinary reputation for the quality of their wine, with Jasper Morris MW writing that they’re ‘a rare domaine which succeeds equally with both red and white wines.’
Based in Meursault, between the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay, the Boillot family have been tending vines and making wines since 1885. Family-run for over a century and holding some of the best vineyard sites across Burgundy, this is a Domaine to buy and to watch. The 2022 vintage was exceptional and Henri Boillot produced ‘an impressive set of 2022s’ (Vinous) across the board.
As ever Henri Boillot’s Bourgogne Chardonnay (‘electric energy’, JM) and Pinot noir (‘a great introduction to the range’, AG) are brilliant and at a very good price point too.
Henri Boillot picked later than most in Meursault ‘yet his results are superb and do not lack freshness.’ (Decanter) The Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Clos Richemont Monopole has the excellent concentration the region is known for while displaying a vibrant acidity alongside notes of citrus zest, apple tart, white florals and oak spice.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles ‘is an absolute delight’ and ‘immediately charming’ according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous. From a top premier cru in the village which this Domaine specialises in and from a site that boarders the famed grand cru site Bâtard Montrachet, this wine essential to any collection.
‘Real grand cru quality’ praises Julia Harding MW of the Henri Boillot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru. The grand cru site of Corton Charlemagne produces white wines among the finest in Burgundy at more attractive prices than their Montrachet counterparts. They are known for their depth in fruit, from baked pear to figs, stony minerality, long finishes and amazing ageing potential, this wine ‘should age for 20 beyond that’ commented Decanter.
Speaking of Montrachet, don’t miss these two. The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet is ‘super-elegant and refined, Boillot’s Batard has a ton to offer, even if it is rather reticent at this stage.’ (AG) and the ultimate 2022 Montrachet. ‘This is a superb Montrachet to basically buy and forget you own it for at least a decade’, writes Allen Meadows, with Antonio Galloni opining, ‘It’s all refinement and class in this stylish, wonderfully appealing Montrachet from Henri Boillot.’
Moving to Pinot Noirs from the steep, narrow vineyards of Volnay, the Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets is ‘beautifully textured and seductively rich’ (Allen Meadows), showing notes of cherry, blackberry, lavender and baking spices. Made from grapes grown in famed red Burgundy grand cru site located in northerly Gevrey-Chambertin, the Henri Boillot Chambertin Grand Cru is precise and finessed, with a complex array of flavours framed by the ‘silkiest tannins. What a gorgeous wine this is.‘ (Antonio Galloni, Vinous)
