‘Screaming Value’ White Burgundy: Daniel Dampt Chablis

Apr 25, 2025 | All, International wines | 0 comments

Chablis continues to offer some of the finest value of all white Burgundy and ‘2023 qualifies as a vintage that’s eminently worth stocking up on’ (Decanter).

This village wine from Daniel Dampt – one of our favourite Chablis producers – shows excellent character, minerality and ageability. From a blend of older and younger vines, it offers great complexity, structure and freshness with notes of green apple, lily-of-the-valley, flint, white peach and mandarin. ‘Certainly, it is one of the better examples of this vintage,’ writes Neal Martin.

Daniel Dampt has been owned by a family of winegrowers for 150 years, and fifth-generation Vincent and Sébastien Dampt now manage their 30ha of vineyards in Chablis. They work on the vineyards and make the wines themselves, which is crucial to the personality and quality of their different cuvées. Allen Meadows of Burghound comments: ‘Given the modest prices that the Dampt family wines typically sell for, they represent screaming value.’

Though perfect as an aperitif, this wine is a great companion to charcuterie, shellfish and creamy cheese and will age well over the next 5-10 years. The last of our 2023s from Chablis, it won’t be available for long!

Tasting Notes:

Daniel Dampt Chablis 2023

‘Here too there is a touch of petrol character to the fresh and bright nose of quinine, oyster shell and lemon confit. The mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is rich to the point of opulence while offering better volume and density on the lightly stony, clean and moderately dry finale. This would also benefit from having better depth but here there’s a good chance it will have time to develop before it’s mature.’ Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

‘The 2023 Chablis Village has a perfumed floral bouquet with Clementine, peach skin and light lanolin aromas. The palate is fresh and crisp with a pithy entry. It’s well-balanced and has a good weight on the finish. Certainly, it is one of the better examples of this vintage.’Neal Martin, Vinous
