Bordeaux 2000. We have access to a terrific parcel that is ideal for enjoying right away – all ex-chateau and now stored in Bordeaux. Vintage 2000 was lauded for two main reasons: firstly, it was a more favourable growing season with good warm days and relatively cool nights, that resulted in structured wines that still have a powerful line of acidity driving the palate. Not without challenges, with a storm sweeping over the region at the end of September before picking resumed early October. Secondly, the vintage was a wlecome change in terms of clear quality compared to a lacklustre decade in the 1990s. Initially wines were lauded with praise during en primeur and this was later confirmed by in-bottle tastings as well as the 10-year on tastings and beyond. A vintage that hearks back to the classic quality and style of the 1980’s.
From our list of wines, highlights include four of the five First Growths. ‘The 2000 Latour is a contender for wine of the vintage, a majestic First Growth flirting with perfection,’‘ notes Neal Martin. Margaux is not far behind though with Martin continuing, ‘the one challenger to Latour’s supremacy on the Left Bank is the sensational Château Margaux.’ Personally, both Brane-Cantenac and Grand-Puy-Lacoste are properties I favour for their classicism. Considering price trends over the last decade, both these wines offer great value.
These are all ready to be enjoyed with no further patience required. However, the quality of the wines and vintage mean that there is no rush either.
