The Mullineuxs are a Swartland powerhouse. Excellence and sustainability lie at the core of what they do, and their Signature wines have become benchmarks since the inaugural 2008 vintage. ‘This is who we are as a Swartland producer, our most important wines,’ enthuses Chris.
Their Old Vines White 2025 is the Swartland in a bottle. Showing waxy stone fruit, hallmark honeycomb and poised citrus, it continues to set the standard for white blends in South Africa. Wines like these offer impressive intensity, persistence and clarity of fruit. The 2025 is a terrific partner for food and will do all the work for maximum enjoyment when opened around a table with friends and family.
Syrah is one of the most important varieties in the country. In the Swartland, it really captures the essence of the region and Mullineux’s expression has pulled in 95+ points year after year. The 2023 Syrah is comforting and has a subtlety about it, with notes of tapenade and dark cherry leading to powdery, velvety tannins.
We were lucky enough to secure a small allocation of the increasingly rare and much-lauded Straw Wine. The 2025 is bright with notes of dried apricot. It’s salty, pithy and properly delicious – lay it down for a year or two and then enjoy it with an almond tart, or on its own.

‘68% Chenin Blanc 14% Clairette Blanche, 6% Semillon, 6% Viognier, 6% Grenache Blanc. The aromatics are expressive and compelling, with notes of pear, peach, citrus, fynbos, and earth. The palate reveals a dense core of fruit, balanced by zippy acidity, leading to a long, dry finish. Full of flavour with great texture—not greasy, but subtly grippy. ‘Outstanding expression of Swartland, using fruit from best parcels owned or viticulturally controlled by Mullineuxs on key soil types. Similar regime to single-terroir syrahs: 90% bunch pressed, 11 months in 500L barrel, 20% new, then year 2,000 & 5, 000 L foudre. Aiming for length & freshness from granite, structure from schist, spice & vibrancy from quartz, voluptuousness from iron. Mullineux Straw Wine 2025 (375ml)

‘The 2024 Straw Wine comes from deep, decomposed granite soils in Paardeberg that offer the highest natural malic acid to counter the concentration. The fruit is dried off the vine for four weeks, with ten months’ fermentation before it naturally comes to a halt. It has extraordinarily pure acacia honey, orange pith and tangerine scents that are beautifully defined. The palate has stunning delineation, a razor-sharp line of acidity and ample weight, but it is not cloying in any way. The finish feels quite stem ginger, leaving the mouth tingling afterwards.
