La Réserve de Mauvesin Barton 2014 is the second wine of Château Mauvesin Barton, part of Barton Family Wines in Moulis-en-Médoc. The nose is immediate with dried red fruit, tilled earth and new leather. The palate follows with white mushroom and savoury notes, driven by a fresh, linear mouthfeel and long acidity.
Lilian Barton-Sartorius, ninth-generation at Barton Family Wines, purchased the property in 2011 with future generations of the family in mind. Situated just west of Margaux and planted predominantly to Merlot on clay soils, the estate produces approachable Bordeaux made to enjoy in their youth.
Now managed by tenth-generation Damien and Mélanie Barton-Sartorius alongside Léoville Barton and Langoa Barton, it’s described as having ‘a real soul that envelops you when you visit, casting a spell as you discover the unique charm of the place’.

‘The nose immediately shows beautiful dried red berries, a clear tilled earth note and an iron filings reference. The palate has an attractive savoury edge with brine, forest mushrooms and then a hint of red currants. The acidity is narrow and long, drawing out the palate. Time in the glass reveals more forest floor-like references which adds real interest. Refreshment value is the key here. Drink with a winter stew or red meats off the braai.
