Meerlust Rubicon 2021 – More refined, more detailed, just better

A special Meerlust Rubicon is released every now and again, and the 2021 is one such wine. This is a modern-day icon in South Africa and has stood the test of time since the 1980s. Is there a more established quality fine wine in South Africa?

2021 is a sensational vintage and all of the top-end releases have corroborated this. The 2021 vintage stands out for its elegance, refined palate textures, layered complexity, and weightless intensity. This Rubicon brims with dark brooding fruit and maritime freshness, followed by a restrained and pitch-perfect structure. Nothing is out of place. It’s not overdone and showcases exceptional balance that seems refreshed, energetic, and ready for a new generation of wine drinkers.

The Meerlust Rubicon 2021 is a classic, vying for the best Rubicon vintage of the last twenty years.

Meerlust’s 2021 Rubicon is a Stellenbosch legend from a near-perfect vintage. It has been a Cape benchmark since its first release and is the oldest Bordeaux-styled red in South Africa. This vintage is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, and spends 18 months in 50% new oak, with the smart oaking adding the finishing touches to a youthful Rubicon promising many years ahead.

Tasting Notes:

Meerlust Rubicon 2021

‘A Cape classic, pioneer Cab & Merlot-led Bordeaux blend, typically bold, assertive & brawny yet precisely poised. Delightful earthy mineral core, with iodine & intense blackcurrant, graphite & delicate leafy highlights. 50% new oak, 18 months. Finer than 2020, there was no 2019 released.’ – Platter’s Guide, 5*(95/100)
